Salem Village Open House Ribbon Cutting.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – National Church Residences celebrated another milestone today with the grand opening of Salem Village, a new affordable senior housing community in the Northland neighborhood. For those ages 62 and older, Salem Village is a $12 million 76-unit apartment complex for independent living, featuring amenities that include a library, a community room with a kitchen, a fitness center and service coordination at its 1009 East Dublin Granville Road location.

“Today is proof positive that, working together, government, nonprofits and the private sector can address the needs of our communities and provide for our most vulnerable citizens,” said HUD Assistant Secretary for Housing Julia R. Gordon. “And today’s ribbon cutting represents just that: an immensely successful partnership between HUD and National Church Residences that extends beyond today and into hundreds of communities across the country that benefit from the work of National Church Residences and its mission to provide affordable housing for low-income seniors.”

Part of more than $50 million of investment in the Northland community by National Church Residences over the past four years, Salem Village furthers the organization’s efforts to provide low-income seniors with more housing options in the area. The community’s precedent-setting funding model includes awards from the recently revived U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program, as well as from Franklin County Magnet funds.

“Affordable housing is the number one challenge facing our community right now,” said Franklin County Board of Commissioners President, John O’Grady. “The new Salem Village apartments add a much-needed and affordable option so that more of our senior residents can continue to live in the place that they’ve called home for many years and with access along a major transit corridor to jobs, shopping and public transportation.”

A new study released by the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio, shows about 54,000 households in Franklin County are extremely housing-cost burdened by spending more than 50% of their income on housing. That often leads to difficult spending choices on food, transportation and medical care.

The organization has a strong presence in the Northland area with affordable housing communities such as Worthington East Court, Northland Gate and Bretton Woods, as well as the SeniorSelect health care center.

“National Church Residences has a history of owning and operating senior housing communities and health care facilities within the Northland community of Columbus since 2003,” said Susan DiMickele, president and CEO of National Church Residences. “The deep trust that others place in us by living in our communities drives our ministry to always be searching for ways to advance senior living and to be a national thought leader. We are honored to be a part of the fabric of Central Ohio.”
