We recently featured Brown & Bills Architects on our blog post, “12 Southwest Ohio Blogs You Need to Be Following” for their architecture blog, and we were interested in learning more about their company and their influence on Dayton, Cincinnati, and other local Ohio communities!

  • What services does your company perform for the southwest Ohio region?
Brown & Bills Architects is a general practice firm that specializes in long-term care and senior living design. Our services include master planning, program coordination, architectural design, NFPA Life Safety/Code review and NFPA 101A Fire Safety Evaluation Systems analysis.
  • What projects have you worked on to enhance the Dayton area? Where can our residents find your work?
We have recently done work for 10 Wilmington Place Retirement Community, Friends Care Community, Hospice of Dayton, and Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties. Other clients in our area include the Stillwater Center, Mercy McAuley Care Center, Mercy Siena Retirement Community, and the Maria Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
  • Do you have any new or exciting projects coming up?
Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices at Lake St. Mary’s and the Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus in Port Clinton, OH. We are also doing a rest stop prototype for the Ohio Department of Transportation for several counties.
  • What are some of your favorite architectural buildings in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas?
Some of our favorite buildings include the Dayton Masonic Temple, the National Aviation Heritage National Historic Park, and the Engineers Club.
  • What are some unique features of the architecture of this region? What sets it apart from other parts of Ohio?
I think that currently there aren’t many defining elements to associate a design style to southwestern Ohio. Our job, perhaps, is to develop this style, which is something that will take years to set in place.

The designs we work on are both consciously and subconsciously influenced by the culture, landscape and materials that are distinct to southwestern Ohio. In sum, we don’t currently have a defined identity, but I think the goal is to establish the identity by being consistent and true to the designs within any relative region.
  • How will your work continue to move the region forward in the future?
Whether our client is in senior living, education, office space, or health care, one of the most important aspects of our jobs as architects is to continually stay up on design trends, and look to improve the built environment for the communities and industries we serve.

These trends include not only the architectural style of our work, but to create buildings that serve the needs of the occupants and are sustainable, maintainable, and energy efficient.
