Spring has arrived, which means it’s time to put away your winter clothes and head outdoors. This time of the year is fun for our seniors in Columbus, Ohio because there are many activities for them to get involved in – rain or shine.

In addition to our own events and resident programs here at First Community Village, there are plenty of chances for adventure all throughout central Ohio.

To accommodate not only seniors but any visiting friends and family members of all ages, we’ve compiled a list of things to do during the springtime in Columbus within these five categories:

Now that the weather forecast is warmer, it’s time to get out and take part in a new adventure you’ll never forget!

Outdoor Activities

Looking to get active this spring? There are loads of opportunities in Columbus for walking, running, hiking and other outdoor activities!

  • Columbus Zoo and Aquarium – Seniors, children, and those in between can have a blast visiting animals from many regions of the world! From elephants to stingrays, a wide variety of animals are featured at the Columbus Zoo, one of the most respected in the world!
  • Scioto Mile – This stretch of 175+ acres of land is located in downtown Columbus and reaches from the Arena District to Whittier Peninsula. Visitors can find everything from an interactive fountain to bike paths to a free outdoor climbing wall.
  • Columbus Commons – A 6-acre public park located in the downtown area, this site is home to many events such as marathons and festivals, and it also features a performance stage and curated garden.
  • Topiary Park – This park has placed an emphasis on art with beautiful gardens, lush landscapes and, of course, topiaries. There are more than 220 trees of 25 different types, allowing for a beautiful, scenic walk or run.
  • Columbus Park of Roses – With over 12,000 roses, this park has become one of the largest public rose gardens in America. The park is free for anyone to visit, with its spring season running from March to May.
  • Metro Parks – Throughout central Ohio, Metro Parks has 19 natural parks that take up more than 200 miles of trails. Each park has its own set of programs and events for seniors and families to utilize, so be sure to take advantage!
  • Hocking Hills – Hocking Hills has miles of parks, trails, caves, waterfalls and more for adventurers to enjoy. Many events take place at the Hills from May to September, such as festivals and concerts.

Festivals and Fairs

Something that Columbus, Ohio residents have to look forward to during the spring every year is the start of festival season! Let’s look at some of our annual favorites. 

  • Paws in the Plaza – Dog owners and lovers will enjoy this monthly festival featuring local vendors, giveaways and pet-friendly activities. (First Thursday of the month, April – October 2017)
  • Short North Gallery Hop – Ohio-based artists are showcased at local galleries, restaurants and other businesses during these hops. There are also street performers, exhibitions and more, so don’t miss them! (First Saturday of the month, February – December 2017)
  • Blooms & Butterflies – This beautiful presentation of butterflies emerging for their first flight features hundreds of flowers in the Pacific Island Water Garden. (March 11 – September 17, 2017)

Shopping

For those looking to expand what’s in their closet or refrigerator, there are plenty of shopping sprees to be had during spring in Columbus.

  • North Market – This public market is filled with a wide variety of fresh, local foods fit for every diet. Keep an eye out for their fun events and activities as well!
  • Easton Town Center – This deluxe shopping center is very popular, bringing in over 25 million visitors annually. Featuring high-end and mid-level outlets, delicious dining and regular entertainment, this is one destination that can’t be missed!
  • Worthington Farmers Market – This farmers market features vendors who produce fresh, locally-made products. There’s everything from vegetables to jams to salsas! (Indoor Season: November – April; Outdoor Season: May – October)
  • Tanger Outlets – This outlet mall is filled with many apparel and specialty stores selling items that everyone in your family will love!
  • Heritage Square Antique Mall – At 53,000 square feet, this is central Ohio’s largest antique mall. Customers can find vintage items, collectables, home décor and much more.
  • Short North Arts District – As Columbus’ “art and soul,” the Short North District has something for everyone. Participate in a tasting/tour combination or explore one of the local galleries.
  • Polaris Fashion Place – As another popular shopping mall in Columbus, Polaris offers shopping for every category and occasion. They also host seasonal, family-friendly events and activities. 

Sporting Events

Those interested in watching spring sports can do so right here in Columbus! Many talented athletes playing in a wide range of events guarantees for a great time. 

  • Columbus Clippers – Spring coming into bloom also means that baseball season is underway! The Clippers are Columbus’ minor-league team, playing games in Huntington Park Stadium.
  • Columbus Crew SC – Those interested in soccer will love going to a lively Crew game! Watch as they battle their opponents in Mapfre Stadium.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets – Columbus favorites the Blue Jackets provide riveting games for an energetic, supportive crowd. Catch a game before their season ends in April!  
  • Ohio State Spring Sports – Football season is over, but the Buckeyes’ spring teams are playing all season! With sports from lacrosse to gymnastics and volleyball, you can pick your favorite and take a visit to campus to watch.
  • Memorial Tournament – This annual golf tournament brings in a big crowd of eager fans traveling from all over to see their favorite professionals on the green. (May 29 – June 24, 2017)

If you’re looking for something out-of-the-box or that’s a key Columbus gem, these places are your best bet! 

  • Columbus Museum of Art – This popular museum is the perfect way to spend a rainy day. Learn about the past, present and future of art with their exhibits or schedule a group tour.
  • COSI – This hands-on science center features education and fun for the entire family. Interactive exhibits and a planetarium make this place unforgettable.
  • Gateway Film Center –More than just a movie theatre, this site features old and new films, independent and mainstream productions, as well as events and special screenings.
  • Columbus Gives Back – Looking for a way to volunteer? This website features many fun and easy ways to help in your local community.
  • Candle Lab – This store allows you to make your own candle! Pick your fragrance and pour your own candle for a fun, unique afternoon activity.
  • German Village – As one of Columbus’ most popular neighborhoods, German Village preserves the history of Germany while also incorporating modern independent businesses and restaurants.
  • Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream – Jeni’s delicious ice cream ranges in flavors while avoiding dyes and synthetic flavorings. First founded in Columbus, this local gem has expanded to other Ohio cities and beyond.
  • Columbus Children’s Theatre – Focused on “enriching the imaginations of children and their families,” this theatre performs plays and musicals that every family member will enjoy.
  • Ohio Statehouse – Located in Capitol Square, the Ohio Statehouse allows visits and tours for those interested in learning about the history of the Buckeye State.
