Seniors who are looking for ways to make the most out of Daylight Saving Time and enjoy the summer sunshine will love going out and about in Bradenton. There are a wealth of hidden treasures within the city, but one memorable place for seniors to get some fresh air and have some fun is LECOM Park.

LECOM Park is a baseball field that’s just minutes from our retirement community. In the early months of the year, sports fans can gather to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates, as LECOM Park is their home location during spring training. During the summer, however, the home team is the Bradenton Marauders, a minor league team that plays in the Florida State League and is a Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pirates!

History and Fun Facts About the Bradenton Marauders

The Marauders received their current name and logo following a move to Bradenton in 2009 after being formerly known as the Sarasota Reds.

This transition made the Marauders the first Florida State League team to be located in Bradenton since the Bradenton Growers in 1926. Since then, the team has worked hard to earn titles and establish a loyal fan base. A few team highlights worth noting include:

  • In 2014, events from the life of former Marauders pitcher Rinku Singh was the basis of the movie Million Dollar Arm. This filmstarred Suraj Sharma as Singh and Jon Hamm as J. B. Bernstein. In both the movie and real life, Bernstein is a sports agent who created a reality television contest in 2008 with the same name as the film.
  • Singh was the winner of this contest, and as a result was given $100,000 and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. To highlight the release of this film, the Marauders gave away a commemorative bobble head to the first 1,000 fans at a home game in May 2014.
